Description
Beautifully hand made and hand painted piece of Danish Arts & Crafts glazed terra cotta pottery. It is a lidded ginger jar which is a rare form from the L. Hjorth Pottery on the island of Bornholm off the coast of Denmark. Lauritz Adolph Hjorth (1831-1912) founded the pottery on the clay rich island in 1859.This piece with a near matte glaze and muted colors is likely thrown by one of his sons Peter or Hans or grandson, Erik Hjorth, the painting would have been done by Lauritz's daughter Thora
and probably dates to the late 1920s or 30s.
Hjorth’s stoneware received the gold medal at the World Exhibition in Brussels in 1910, and later went on to receive many other international awards.
This covered jar measures 6 inches in diameter and stands 5 3/4 inches tall. The underside is marked with the impressed L. Hjorth signature, standing stag trademark, and incised with the number 20. No chips or cracks, excellent condition.
