Description
This book (Pioneering in Masonry copyright 1922) has been part of the Morris family archives since mid 1920s. It was signed and inscribed by author Lucien V Rule to a friend (Bert Finck) and somehow came into possession of HA (Harry Alfred) Morris (great-grandson of Rob Morris). Harry passed away in 1950 and this book has been untouched for 70 years. Included in this lot is 4 old brittle typewritten pages that formHISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE ORDER OF THE EASTERN STAR that was folded and inserted into book between page 226 and 227..
Yes, the typewriter was quite commonly used in the mid 1880s, but not certain if these are original Rob Morris dissertation. The type looks too precise and evenly spaced to be a sample from 1884 (who knows?, the provenance of many family items is unimpeachable back to Rob Morris).
This lot includes book and the 4 old brittle typewritten pages dated
Lagrange, Ky August 1, 1884
.
They form the text
for
HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE ORDER OF THE EASTERN STAR.
The first 3 pages are the history and the 4th page is a poem that appears to have been published.
The book is weathered, soiled, stained, but binding is in tact. Some (few pages) pencil notations inside.
The inset is photographed (see photo). It is signed upper left H.A Morris and the inscription
is
To my very dear Friend,
Bert Finck
with Every Kindly Wish.
Lucien V. Rule
Significant age discoloration and folds (with minor tears and rough edging) on typewritten pages.
