This Impressive Portfolio contains 12 full-sized color plates of Ryman’s work, with a foldout page of 3 panoramas of the Civil War. Also included are 7 smaller pages of Ryman’s work in the back of the book with a page identifying the works. Reflective of Herb’s elegant style, this Tribute Portfolio is beautifully Bound using Textured Rice Paper Covers fastened with a small tree branch and ribbon.

Disney, The Vice Chairman of The Walt Disney Company Board offers his feelings of Herb Ryman at the very start of this tribute. “From the first time I ever met Herb Ryman, and increasingly as the years went by, I have been convinced that he was a leprechaun . . . or at the very least a druid. Herbie had this air of naivete’ and joy and wonderment about everyone and everything he came in contact with. He had a love of life and people and places and things that never left him and invariably left those around him better and happier for having known him. Herb Ryman started working for Disney in 1938 as an Art Director on Fantasia and Dumbo. Herb’s art work that Disney enthusiasts admire most, however, are Ryman’s stunning concepts of Walt Disney’s proposed amusement park featured locations at Disneyland, Walt Disney World & EPCOT that we have all come to view with total amazement.
Starting in 1932, Ryman worked at the Metro-Golden-Mayer Studios during Hollywood’s “Golden Age” as the sole artist and illustrator for MGM Studios. He helped to design the screen styling of "David Copperfield", "A Tale of Two Cities”, "Mutiny on the Bounty", and "Anna Karenina”. His work on "The Good Earth" project inspired him to leave his job at MGM and tour China where he made many sketches. His last work at MGM was on the Emerald City segment of "The Wizard of Oz”.
Ryman also worked at 20th Century Fox in the 1940’s on “Anna and the King of Siam” along with “Forever Amber”, “David and Bathsheba”, “The Black Rose” and “The Robe”. During the summers of 1949 and 1951, Ryman took leave from 20th Century Fox and traveled with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. Living among the performers and documenting the circus in his paintings, he became friends with Emmett Kelly.
On September 26, 1953, Herb Ryman received an urgent request to meet with Walt Disney. Disney asked Ryman to render the artwork for a Disney envisioned theme park. Disney and Ryman worked non-stop throughout the weekend creating a large pencil sketch and several other drawings illustrating the project. Roy Disney took the drawings and a six-page portfolio to New York to show investors the plan in order to secure financing used to develop Disneyland. Since those very first drawings that helped to secure the needed million dollars from the bankers to build Disneyland, Walt’s fabulous parks have always been in a constant state of moving forward.
Herb Ryman’s talents were responsible for the beautiful original concepts drawings for Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle Walt Disney World’s Cinderella Castle and both iconic Castles at Tokyo Disneyland and Disneyland Paris
Ryman officially retired from The Walt Disney Company in 1971. He returned in 1976 as a consultant on Walt Disney World, Epcot Center including renderings and concept paintings for The American Adventure, the China Pavilion, and Meet the World attraction at Tomorrow Land at Tokyo Disneyland. Herb Ryman also worked with the famed “Roots” Author Alex Haley and fellow Disney Artist, Ken Anderson on The Africa Pavilion

Herb Ryman, Ken Anderson and Alex Haley worked together for over two years developing the artwork, story, scripts, backgrounds and village concept models for The Africa Pavilion that was planned to open in 1982, only one year after Epcot’s grand opening of The World Showcase. The Africa Pavilion would have been located between China and Germany. This magnificent Tribute Portfolio of The Works of Herbert Ryman is in wonderful condition for now being almost -30 YEARS OLD!- The Portfolio has been stored for years in its original mailing container and shows little wear.
